The passionate, emotional, sensuous art we call Flamenco is a musical form which over the centuries has drawn upon the musical traditions of many of the great world cultures; Indian, Arab, and North African among others. For hundreds of years, flamenco has been a tribal art of the gypsy peoples of Southern Spain. They came to Spain from their ancestral lands in Rajasthan in Northern India, through Afghanistan, Iran, Palestine, Egypt, and North Africa. Sevilla is the capital city of flamenco, and was also the sole entry port for trade with the Indies and thus flamenco was further enriched by Afro-Cuban influences. Flamenco has become one of the most exciting public performance arts, incorporating elements from a variety of other art forms into its repertoire, while retaining its root, the haunting qualities of the music and dance of flamenco puro.

Azahar is a non-profit corporation with a mission to support the wider dissemination of the arts of flamenco music and dance. It produces public events involving the most exciting new flamenco companies in the Bay Area, and offers performance opportunities to young artists who are new to the public stage. It also arranges demonstrations and recitals in schools and colleges, primarily in Santa Clara and San Mateo counties.

We have some exciting events coming up! If you would like more information, please contact us at azahar1@igc.org.
