Organization
San Jose Dance Theatre
This organization was founded in 1954 as Paul E. Curtis Jr.’s Los Gatos Academy of Dance and the West Valley Ballet Foundation. The name was changed to San Jose Dance Theatre in 1966 and incorporated as a nonprofit educational organization in 1968. Many of its alumni have gone on to professional careers in dance and ice-skating.
San José Dance Theatre produced San Jose’s first complete version of Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker in 1966 under the direction of founding directors and choreographers Paul E. Curtis, Jr. and Shawn Stuart. It is the second longest running production in the Bay Area. Only San Francisco Ballet’s production has had a longer run. By open audition, dancers from over twenty schools in the area join professional dancers for parts in The Nutcracker. This unique combination of local, regional and national performers makes this production a tradition that is truly a celebration.

We Love this Nutcracker! My family has been coming to this Nutcracker for over 20 years. It our family tradition. The sets, the costumes, the 24 gingerbread cookies all make this production so fun but yet very professional. We think this is the best Nutcracker in the Bay Area.

We go every year, and every year the performance
gets better and better. There is no better
Nutcracker if you have children.
We love seeing all the young dancers performing
with the professionals. And watching the young
performers grow from roll to roll every year, we feel
like we know them. If I was a dancer, this would be
the show for me!!
And don't miss the party after the show; getting to
see the characters up close is a special treat for the
young ones in the family.
Congratulations on the 40th anniversary San Jose
Dance Theatre. We are looking forward to the next
40!!
