    TheatreWorks

With a reputation for artistic excellence, innovation, diversity, and integrity, TheatreWorks is Silicon Valley’s leading professional nonprofit theatre company. TheatreWorks presents a year-round season of musicals, comedies, and dramas in the state-of-the-art Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts and at the graceful California Mission-style Lucie Stern Theatre in Palo Alto.

Founded by Artistic Director Robert Kelley in 1970, TheatreWorks is dedicated to the discovery and development of new voices in the American theatre. It regularly stages new works -- many, developed in the company’s own New Works Initiative program. It frequently produces regional and West Coast premieres of important modern and contemporary works from Broadway, off-Broadway, and beyond. It also stages distinctive re-imaginings of the classics.

Saw play 10/22. Audience 50% full at beginning of play. MANY of us RAN out at the intermission... that speaks volumes! Old ladies running to their cars. Very uninteresting. The friend I was with was 74 and sees half a dozen plays a year for decades... this was first one she eagerly left at intermission. She said, "meet you in the lobby" and then we both ran out. If one wants to hear a men only cast debate with page numbers, the wisdom of various esoteric religious texts, then "go for it." Collapse

Loved it, very emotionally riveting. Less about the friendship between the two boys, more about their relationships with their fathers. We cried.

Everyone on stage seemed to be trying very hard to make it a great show, but the play is just not all that interesting. The constant use of a Narrator who continually takes us out of the drama never allows the audience to really empathize with the characters. It made a great novel, but as a play it just felt heavy handed and mundane. Collapse

This thought-provoking show is hilariously funny while probing the serious issue of racism with a fresh approach. It is also fabulously acted, with most of the small cast playing many, many roles, crossing race and gender boundaries. No! Stomping on race and gender boundaries. Go and enjoy this show. Collapse

This show is certainly predictable, and not a brain buster but still a nice effort. The set and costuming is almost worth it alone. Clever stuff if you like old fashioned comedy....
