Vivace Youth Chorus of San Jose

Vivace Youth Chorus of San Jose is a community-based, non-profit organization open to all children, ages 4 and up in the San Jose area. Vivace offers a quality Kodaly-based choral music program for children throughout San Jose at their Stone Church rehearsal location on Lincoln Avenue. Singers are given instruction in music theory, ear training and vocal technique as well as the opportunity to sing repertoire ranging from folk to classical music. The children perform in two major, semester-end concerts per year, and also at other community functions.

    Those lucky enough to be in the audience for this performance had to know they were in the presence of a composer worthy to be included in the top composers of our day. The progressions, harmonies, and orchestration were seamless,the beauty of lyrical passages, the power and flow of the tensions, highlighted by a well-trained solo soprano all combined for a musical experience well worth remembering. The smallest of detraction (which may be solely in my perception) was the solosist's interpretation of the "I shall keep singing" passage. The music seemed to indicate a declarative resolve to keep singing which rose to a firm celebration of that resolve. I did not hear such emotion or transition of emotion in this singer's performance, despite her beautiful and technically-flawless delivery. That aside, anyone who enjoys music on any level should beat a path to the door of this composer and leap at the chance to hear Brain Holmes' works performed as one who defines our musical age.
