Willow Glen Children's Theatre
Since 1988, Willow Glen Children's Theatre (WGCT) has been giving children the opportunity to act on stage. Since its early days, director Gavin Coffing has been adamant about providing all children the same opportunities, and WGCT continues the tradition of casting every auditioning child in the productions.
This organization is one of the Bay Area's most innovative children's theatres, partly due to the fact that it is always producing new plays. All of its productions begin in Theatre Connection Workshops. Meeting Saturday mornings, children ages seven and up work closely with the director and theatre staff to create characters and improvised scenes. The young actors also get the opportunity to play fun and interactive theatre games. These workshops culminate in the presentation of an original play written by the director. The children really benefit from the whole process.
This unique approach to theatre allows children to build their confidence and meet new friends. The interactive games and improvisations help with presentation, speaking and listening skills. In addition, skills in group work are cultivated through various activities.
Willow Glen Children's Theatre offers a four-week day camp each summer. It offers a very popular class with kids ages three to five called Fairy Tale Theatre. Also, WGCT collaborates with schools, offering several afterschool programs. It has worked with such elementary schools as Willow Glen, Noddin and Booksin; it has also worked with Willow Glen Middle School.
