Crystal Springs Players
In 1993, a number of members from the Crystal Springs United Methodist Church in San Mateo decided that they wanted to put on plays for the community. Having little idea of the effort, time and commitment necessary to pull off this bold idea, they blithely started on their way. With a generous grant from the Peninsula United Methodist Foundation, they, at least, had a secure financial base for their first show. Despite many mistakes, they managed to not only actually put on two short plays, but more importantly, became bitten with the theater bug. They were hooked.
The company now produces two full productions per year. Their plays have included You Can't Take It With You, I Remember Mama, The Shadow Box, Godspell, A Piece of My Heart, The Boys Next Door, California Suite, Many Moons, The Solid Gold Cadillac, and Twelve Angry Jurors.

For the record, Godspell isn't one of my top 10 musicals (Stephen Schwartz doesn't make my top 10 at all :-) ) That said, this Godspell, done by a local group at Crystal Springs United Methodist Church in San Mateo is remarkably good, especially for the ticket price of $10-18. SF actor Steven Slatten in the role of Jesus has a marvelous voice and great acting talent, moving from whimsy to seriousness with ease. Performing kudos also to Mark Drumm as Judas, Beth Covey who also choreographs and Joy Eaton who is CSP’s artistic director. Adena DeMonte does a terrific staging job for her first directorial effort, and Chris Tani’s lighting proves that a good designer can do wonders with almost no equipment. The combo (aptly named The Dead Sea Trolls) led by Martuni's standout pianist Ben Prince provides nice music for the show. If you are looking for a reasonably priced way to introduce your family or kids to musical theater, you could hardly do better than to try this one. Collapse
