Schola Cantorum
Schola Cantorum, founded in 1964 by the late Royal Stanton, is one of the largest and most successful choral groups in the Bay Area, with 100 singers representative of communities throughout the area. Under the baton of Music Director Gregory Wait, Schola Cantorum continues to present dynamic performances of masterpieces from the choral repertoire, new works by major composers and music from diverse musical traditions. It continues its commitment to choral education and participation through its very successful Messiah Sings, Summer Sings, Broadway Sing-Along and a Christmas Carol Sing-Along.
Over the years, Schola Cantorum has gained a reputation for the quality of its performances and the eclectic nature of its programming. Whether presenting the great choral masterpieces of the last three centuries, newly-commissioned works and arrangements, traditional works, or music from around the globe, Schola Cantorum strives for excellence in performances. It welcomes qualified new singers of every cultural tradition and encourages everyone to experience the joy of singing, whether as a member of the chorus or at one of its many Sing-Along events.

Schola Cantorum and its Music Director Gregory Wait are particularly at home singing in German, and especially when they are singing Brahms. This was particularly evident in Sunday's Beloved Brahms concert, which began on a lighter note with the Liebeslieder Waltzes and, following intermission, Ein Deutsches Requiem. Unlike many performances that feature a full orchestra, this one was accompanied by Schola's Assistant Conductor, Dawn Horst Reyen and Paul Zawilski on piano. This allowed the audience to experience the full range of Schola's considerable dynamic and artistic range. It also permitted the choir to sing more expressively than when singing over heavier instrumentation. This concert was an excellent demonstration of Schola doing what it does best. A very enjoyable autumn afternoon. Collapse
