San Jose Stage again 'walks the edge' successfully. Just don't walk in thinking that this is another comedy or musical presentation. Interesting that this is an appropriate 'Halloween Season' presentation. Intriguing indicator of the Human Condition .. In this case it makes you wonder a little about the author and where his head is at. Collapse

It's a very dark, funny and well written play. The acting was solid but lacked the edge it needed to really make you cringe, which is what this play is supposed to do. Often the tension just disappeared when it should have been at its height. There are some funny moments which make it worth the trip. I just wish they had really gone for it. I felt that the production was held up in intensity. I can only speculate as to why, but maybe they were concerned with offending the conservative audiences. Read some of the other reviews on here and you will understand why. Collapse

This was my third time seeing The Pillowman. I saw it with the original cast in London and thought the play was over after Act I (I was a bit jetlagged.) But, was thrilled that there was more. Not to spoil anything, but the "surprise" at the end of Act II was truly unexpected and made me question what really happened. The second time I saw it at Berkeley Rep (and brought several friends along) I came to a different conclusion. This time I have a new understanding. I brought my 16-year old nephew to this performance and at intermission he told me "this is really good." He got a lot of the humor and the dark stuff was really dark. On the drive home, we had a lot to talk about because it is a play that needs to be talked about. The acting was very good, especially Aaron Wilton as Katurian. Overall, it was a great night at the theatre. Collapse

Don't miss this! A fine play, well-performed! We laughed in the theatre and we talked about it all the way home. I'm still thinking about it. We'll be back to San Jose Stage Company!

As usual, SJ Stage has presented an intellectually and emotionally challenging performance. The material is quite dark. But, it has enough "light" and humanizing moments to keep one from sinking too far down while thinking about the show well afterwards. With this material and happenings in our society, it could hit maybe a bit too close to home for certain viewers. This play is not for the squeamish. However, it is memorable, with fine writing and acting! Collapse

This play impressed me with some of the most convincing and finest acting I have seen in some time! I was on the edge of my seat during most of the performance. Keep up the fine work!

I thoroughly enjoyed this show. I have seen that the subject matter disturbs some people, but the direction and acting are top-rate and absolutely worth seeing. This is one of the best shows that I have seen at The Stage. It's long, but it moved so well I hardly felt the time pass. It's a wonderfully top-rate production from a truly brave and professional Bay Area company. Collapse

I am sorry to say I left at intermission. Toturing and murdering children is not my thing. However, the acting was excellent - that didn't help. I would love someone to tell me how it ended.
