"Everything a Sullivan comedic operetta should be—delightful!"

Without much in the way of a theatrical model to follow, director Barbara Murray and choreographer Shannon Self shaped this little-performed operetta with a skillful hand. There are a few rough edges, but the Lyric Theatre Company has done well. Alexandra Kendall (coloratura soprano), making her debut as the Sultana "Rose in Bloom," plays her character with feeling and charm, and nails the complexity of "Neath my lattice" with power, beauty, precision, and diction. Mark Blattel (comic baritone) sings his way through the part of Hassan in good comedic fashion. Indre Viskontas (mezzo-soprano) as Heart's Desire commands the stage effortlessly and her musicality is dead on. Dan Galpin (tenor), in his role as Yussuf the storyteller, is energetic, precise in song, and adhesive to the action. Lisa Lutkenhouse Lowe’s exotic costume design and Greg Anderson’s nuance from the orchestra and chorus are the icing on this delightful, must-see production. Collapse

Sure, the music is amazing, the sets are great, the staging is lovely and this piece shows us what it is of which Sullivan is capable without Gilbert. But much more important than that is that they've shown, once and for all, that the myth of the standard "opera singer" appearance was left firmly in the 20th century. Yep, amazing women in harem outfits singing amazingly. Come for the harem outfit, stay for the (bizarre, ridiculous, very Gilbert-esque) plot. Collapse

This is a really funny show with great headliner performances. The costumes are gorgeous, the comedy is well timed, and the voices are strong. Very worth your time.

Lyric Theater's latest production, The Rose of Persia, is a pleasure of sight and sound. With a wash of exotic colors and costumes on stage and the beautiful lilting melodies of Arthur Sullivan, this show transports the audience to the fantastic realm of the Arabian Nights. Add in the British comedy inherent to the Gilbert and Sullivan genre, and you have a delightful evening of entertainment the whole family can enjoy. Lyric’s exuberant cast and attention to theatrical detail make this a once in a life time opportunity no one should miss. Collapse

Imagine a runaway Sultana with a jealous husband, and an eccentric rich man with an ambitious wife heading his harem. Then add a vindictive holyman, a wandring storyteller, an executioner, four royal slaves and a host of vagabonds and thieves, and you've got Hood & Sullivan's "The Rose of Persia." Lyric Theatre comes through again with a solid show at a great price. The performance is energetic and fun, with wonderful singing and beautiful costumes and sets. I highly recommend it for teens and adults of all ages, although it may be too long for small children. Collapse

I attended The Rose of Persia on opening night, and it was fabulous. I have long been a fan of Gilbert & Sullivan, and was quite surprised and pleased that Sullivan had found a collaborator equal to his past trumphs for this, his last operetta. The music is wonderful, the dancing is first-rate, the acting is exemplary, the slave girls are beautiful, and the story is entertaining without being silly. A Must See! Collapse

My husband and I saw this show on opening night and we were immensely entertained! Lyric has outdone itself. The leads were all superbly engaging, particularly Mark Blattel as Hassan. The chorus also delivered a solid performance. The costumes are amazing and so are the sets! This was Sullivan's last completed opera and, some say, his best. Basil Hood is every bit as funny as W.S. Gilbert as the brilliant librettist, and there are some great references to previous G & S shows! Don't miss it! Collapse
