Right up front, I must say that the sets and lighting were maybe the best I've ever seen in a local production. Anatevka really looked like an actual village, not a cheap facade and the staging of The Dream was simply astounding. Of course, Fiddler will live and die on its Tevye and Daniel Matis delivers a towering performance, effectively balancing the bluster and tenderness. Claudia McCarley is more than his match as Golde. The daughters sing beautifully in a showstopping Matchmaker, Matchmaker. Darlene Batchelder steals every scene as Yente. The orchestra is lush and the chorus sounds gorgeous. Only the clunky dancing prevents it from being a perfect evening out. Collapse

Just a very few times in one's lifetime does time stop still and only upon looking back do you realize that you have been in the midst of a sacred happening. Those of us in the audience at Leonard Cohen and et al's mesmerizing concert had our collective breath taken away, especially as Mr. Cohen's energetic demeanor gave way to his wise, timeless songs like "So long Maryanne", "Hallelujah", "A Thousand Kisses Deep" and the jaw-dropping instrumentals that caused an almost sold-out-house to give ovation-after-ovation. The enormous pavilion that houses hockey games (!!) became a hushed sanctuary when Mr. Cohen's words to "If It Be Your Will" were followed by the spell-binding and unforgettable performance by the Webb sisters then singing the song. Like everyone else there I felt honored, so very fortunate, to bear witness as Mr. Cohen and his musicians channeled sound from a place few artists can ever hope to access. Mr. Cohen, what a gift you are to the world. Gratitude for this night. Collapse

3 actors, an AMAZING set, and a script that is topical, political, balanced, and tight. This play with no intermission has you agreeing and disagreeing all the way through and by the end the actors and playwright have done a solid job of showing you 3 very different perspectives. Get there early and read the production notes if you aren't familiar with the history of apartheid and the diamond industry, it will give you a nice history channel kind of background to help with the fact that this play has very little exposition. It jumps right in and dares you to take a side. Interesting and I feel important. Collapse

Schola Cantorum and its Music Director Gregory Wait are particularly at home singing in German, and especially when they are singing Brahms. This was particularly evident in Sunday's Beloved Brahms concert, which began on a lighter note with the Liebeslieder Waltzes and, following intermission, Ein Deutsches Requiem. Unlike many performances that feature a full orchestra, this one was accompanied by Schola's Assistant Conductor, Dawn Horst Reyen and Paul Zawilski on piano. This allowed the audience to experience the full range of Schola's considerable dynamic and artistic range. It also permitted the choir to sing more expressively than when singing over heavier instrumentation. This concert was an excellent demonstration of Schola doing what it does best. A very enjoyable autumn afternoon. Collapse

It's a very dark, funny and well written play. The acting was solid but lacked the edge it needed to really make you cringe, which is what this play is supposed to do. Often the tension just disappeared when it should have been at its height. There are some funny moments which make it worth the trip. I just wish they had really gone for it. I felt that the production was held up in intensity. I can only speculate as to why, but maybe they were concerned with offending the conservative audiences. This was my third time seeing The Pillowman. I saw it with the original cast in London and thought the play was over after Act I (I was a bit jetlagged.) But, was thrilled that there was more. Not to spoil anything, but the "surprise" at the end of Act II was truly unexpected and made me question what really happened. The second time I saw it at Berkeley Rep (and brought several friends along) I came to a different conclusion. This time I have a new understanding. I brought my 16-year old nephew to this performance and at intermission he told me "this is really good." He got a lot of the humor and the dark stuff was really dark. On the drive home, we had a lot to talk about because it is a play that needs to be talked about. The acting was very good, especially Aaron Wilton as Katurian. I am a season subscriber to City Lights because I have always found their productions to be first rate. This is certainly true for "The Last Days of Judas Iscariot". As you would expect, this is a courtroom drama with some excellent unexpected comedy scenes. This production has a large cast composed of very talented actors each creating believable complete characters. All of the major characters were extremely well portrayed including Judas, Jesus, St. Matthew, Mother Teresa, Sigmund Freud, the Judge and Baliff. Special recogntion should be given to John Romano (as a hilarious prosecuter), Alika Ululani Spencer (as a sexy and very competent defence attourney), Jake Vincent (as a mob-boss-like Pontius Pilate), and Jeff Clarke (as a delightfully wicked Satan). I was stunned by the overall talent and endurance of this cast. The actor(Romano)and actress(Alika) playing the lawyers have created engaging and entertaining characters that are on stage most of the show! What focus and strength! Jeff Clark as Satan and Jake Vincent as Pontius Pilot absolutely knocked my socks off; spontaneous and honest they were definite stand outs--along with Vera Sloan that opens the show with a lovely, heart wrenching monologue. It's a treat to see her play such a role after seeing her in THE THREE MUSKATEERS; this actress can definitely do it all. Issac as Judas was a treat as well; his last scene with Jesus(the actor playing Jesus was spectacular) was riveting and moving. Be sure to look out for Jake Van Tuyl, Angel Ordaz, and Ken Boswell in smaller roles. They almost steal the show with their endearing characters. Ken Boswell in particular was simply amazing; his performance beautiful, straightforward, and real. Bravo Kit Wilder and CLTC! Collapse

I caught "Judas Iscariot" last Friday, and despite the heat in that little theatre, it was an amazing production. Strong acting from the ensemble, with notable performances by Lonnique Genelle, Bill Davidovich, and Ken Boswell. Jeff Clarke's Satan was vilely superb, and Jake Vincent's Pontius Pilate was nasty, yet thoroughly entertaining. Technically the show is very sound, underscoring the play but not overshadowing it. With the exception of a pointless video footage segment, the tech was great. The show drags a little in the beginning, but soon picks up into a roller coaster of philosophy and ideas that will leave you thinking for days. That's the best kind of theatre. Kudos to City Lights and Kit Wilder on this deeply complex production. Collapse

It was amazing well danced and choreograph with serious attempt to honor the Hawaiin traditions & culture. 2nd half more an unexpected dance to a Shakira song and then Mahealani's search for her roots: Cherokee, African & Hawaii. First 1/2 before intermisssion with the Cheifs Dance included tribute to our Hawaiin born Obama - was worthy of presentation at the White House. 2nd Half was a more community level presentation. Where were the male dancers?? Sacred Music festival had a power packed male dance.Music & drumming & singers wonderful, well worth it. My comment is a thought from the Blue Mountain Center of Meditation- Eknath Easwaran's We should take care not to make the intellect our Gods;it has,of course, powerful muscles, but no personality-Albert Einstein. The teachings of great spirtual figures such as the Buddha are practical, not theoretical. The scriptures are meant for translation into daily lives over a long period of years. And in order to practice the teachings of the Compassionate Buddha,or any other teacher,we need an immense tool like mediation by which we can work on our consciousness. In this, it is not of much help to have only an intellectual understanding. The Buddha doesn't talk about theory. Like All Great Teachers, he says, "These are things that you can verify for yourself." This show moves to San Francisco for a few weeks after this production and if you missed in in San Jose, it's worth a trip up to see it not only for the actual poetry and lyric quality of the story telling, but because the unique puppetry and presentation is unlikely to be something you see again in your life. It took my about 10 minutes to visually adapt to everything i'm looking and listening to, but this 75 minute no intermission production was dark, comic, moving, poingant, and political. Creative to be sure, and different, this is on par with all the great work that Teatro Vision does, i'm just always impressed with their show topics and high production value! Well done! Collapse

If you haven't seen Ghosts of the River yet, you are missing out! Truly you are in for (an appropriate for Halloween) treat! I'm honored that my friend actually came thinking it was a sock puppet or shadowed hands type of show and was so wrong! It's a creative combination of many forms of art and theater combined. The entire concept was historic and poetic yet brilliantly transcribed into quite modern compelling and actually very funny stories, some based on some true events. It just kept getting better and better! After the show, our audience was given a unique opportunity to go behind the scenes and watch all the artists perform a piece! The writer, Octavio said it best, "It was like seeing "how a clock works from behind the face! I'm not a fan of this script, but SCP put on a great performance. It was very fun and oh so cute! There were a lot of little moments from everyone, especially the ensemble. Breigh Zach was made for this part and Dauntless played by Brett Carlson was perfect. Great performance by Kelly Breslen who has a wonderful presence on stage. Mike Rhone has a beautiful voice, however, he didn't seem to connect with Breslen as much as I would have liked to see. This show was cute. The lead, played by Breigh Zack, was good enough to pull of this part. She had a good energy and was funny but the singing really was not there. She really has to redeem herself with her acting. I may have liked her performance in this role a lot more if I hadn't seen her play the same character twice this year. Dauntless, played by Brett Carlson, was the best Dauntless I have seen so far. He really seemed to get the right amount of cute boy and awkward into the role without making it stupid. Lady Larken, played by Kelly Breslen, was very pretty and funny. She seems to have a different take on the role then I have seen before. Her opposite Sir Harry, played by Mike Rhone, has a beautiful singing voice though he seems to be scared of lady larken. The other leads were enjoyable. The ensemble had a lot of fun little bits that really added some great moments to the show. Collapse

Let me begin by emphasizing that I am in no way connected to the cast or crew. I recently saw "Mattress" -- the first act, anyway -- done exceptionally poorly in this area, so I attended this production with somewhat lowered expectations. I needn't have worried. To my pleasant surprise, Sunnyvale has mounted a delightfully sweet show with a rather spartan cast and an almost nonexistent set. The magic is in the nearly perfect cast, starting with minstrel Dan Galpin (a vocal ringer for Mandy Patinkin) and including drop-dead gorgeous Kelli Breslin as Lady Larkin and comedienne Breigh Zack, who expertly channels original "Mattress" star Carol Burnett. This was as entertaining an evening as I've ever spent in NorCal; just try not to be put off by the ticket price, which is a trifle inflated. I was a tad crestfallen to see only five actors in the ensemble, but gratified that gorgeous Jeanne Martin was among them. Kevin Kirby directs with a smooth hand and a big heart. Bravo, bravissimo! I just saw Angela Lansbury on broadway (5 *), so 3.5 is an excellent amount of stars for a very small community show! As with any community production, there are hits and misses, and not every note or every step is perfect, however, there were many standout performances, and everyone had strengths and gave a performance each could be proud of. A real shame there wasn't a bigger crowd, as the performers all worked very hard. Extra wonderful were Breigh Zack as Winifred, Brett Carlson as the Prince, Dan Galpin as the Minstrel, and Robin Hansen as Queen Aggravain. Kelli Breslin is charming as Lady Larkin, and Mike Rhone sang the role of Sir Harry beautifully. There were some rough patches here and there, but nothing to be ashamed of. There were two things that were distracting; many costumes were ill-fiting and incohesive, and there were times when the actors faced each other singing over-long, losing the connection with the audience, and losing volume. Worth seeing. Good job SVCP. Collapse

We had lots of fun. The cast was extremely capable and energetic, surprising for such a small production. There wasn't an off note or misstep in the whole two-hour performance. We had a great time singing along, and were really impressed by the caliber of the production. It was beyond expectations for small, local theatre. We were surprised to see so many kids in the audience - expected more 30-somethings like ourselves. Personally, I wanted to go for nostalgic reasons - I grew up in the area and spent many hours in the lobby of this theatre waiting for friends to get off work. It's been restored into retro 60s lounge style, and the concession offerings are customized to each show. Soon they're going to have themed movie nights, which we're looking forward to. Collapse

Great costumes and sets, a fabulous orchestra and perfect performances from Leo and Oola can't make up for the fact that this production isn't funny and the direction is not on par with the usually excellent work done by SBMT. It's unclear why the production team felt that the brilliant Mel Brooks script needed re-writing. Why add in scenes from the original film that were not included in the musical? Was SBMT given special license to do this? Highly doubtful. The addition of music from Gypsy was inappropriate, and the accompanying strip- tease was creepy and tacky. While the sets looked great, poor planning caused ridiculous scene shift problems that helped kill the comedy. The never- ending presence of smoke and dark mood-lighting made it seem like a 3-hour dream sequence from a Rodgers and Hammerstein show. Was this intentional? Let's hope there are better things to come from this group for the remainder of their season. Collapse

An ambitious project for a smaller stage than I have seen this show done on before. Overall technical aspects were pleasing, and the orchestra (although a bit loud) was solid. I think my only challenge was that the cast (and it was once of the hardest working ensembles i've seen) of main characters seemed to be single or double threats, but just shy of that triple. Some great acting but not great singing, some GREAT singing, but not great acting, and where the acting and the singing came together, it seemed the choreography was reduced perhaps to match the limitations of the individual. Although a great show overall, it was shy of expectations by this fact that not ALL the elements came together totally. Worth the price though if you try to stay away from the front sides. Collapse

I attended the Saturday matinee performance of this wonderful show and was entertained from beginning to end. I especially enjoyed the performances of Nicholas Adams as Leo, Robyn Winslow as Ulla, and Bob Visini as Roger. I must give a "shout out" to Carly Honfi who had me laughing every time she came on stage. That girl can make the most of a small part! Collapse

Not that SJ is by any means a small town but we enjoyed this show like any night out in SF. Im by no means a theater-snob but I do catch the big shows when they are in SF (& one or 2 if I make it out east) & Id have to say this was easily as good as the SF production I saw a few years ago & in some ways better. The casting was exceptional; Max & Leo have that "loud mouth/little guy" chemistry from the get go & Oola...ooo-lala, she was quite the swedish bombshell she needed to be. Overall the sets were great, costumes were fantastic, the music was top-notch & the players really worked hard to entertain us (& entertain us they did). It was very cool to see such a big show at such an intimate venue & thoroughly enjoy it without spending $75 a ticket. (can I mention that the A/C worked even with a full house & the seats were comfortable?) Collapse

Easily the most fun for your buck in the bay area, SBMT's The Producers is a must see. The talented folks at SBMT consistently deliver a standard of quality and professionalism that belies their status as "community theater" and The Producers is no exception. Everything about this production hits the mark; great orchestra, perfect casting, drop dead gorgeous costumes and tons of little touches that never fail to delight (the intermission faux "playbill" for example. Hysterical!) I have to say: I enjoyed this performance more than the truck & bus I saw in LA a few years ago with a woefully miscast Jason Alexander. Kudos to everyone involved. Collapse

From what I had heard, repeated Standing O's...and totally worth the hype! Absolutley brilliantly cast, the sets are HUGE, and a wonderful show for the "new" SBMT. A must-see!

This play was amazing! The actors were spot on in character and the jokes were perfectly timed. I haven't been to the theater in close to 10 years and this was a GREAT show to start my way back. The actors worked hard and that definitely showed on stage. The dance scenes were great and the comedic timing left me laughing hysterically in my seat. This was a great performance and I recommend everyone take some time to go watch this wonderful group play this great show! Collapse

A fun night out, full of laughs and great local talent. Love it when community theater demonstrates obvious hard work, but yet doesn't take itself so seriously that humor and entertainment value is drained from the soul of the show. Very well done - bravo to the cast and production team! Hope you enjoy a great run! Collapse
