This is the most enjoyable production of Spelling Bee (one of my favorite shows) I've ever seen. It's very, very funny, and the cast does a fantastic job! Be sure to see it this weekend!

CMT's Mainstage Production of the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is one of the BEST productions since the original cast on Broadway. Kevin Hauge has once again brought his creative vision to life by taking originally a 12 person show into a SPECTACULAR WONDERFUL 35+ person show. I've had the fortune of seeing both casts, who are both extremely well acted but prefer the performance of the Oxford cast. Nick Perry as Leaf Coneybear brought the house down, as well as Chris Renalds as comfort counselor Mitch Mahoney and Ryan Vasquez as the dull but funny Vice Principal Doug Panche. One of the best parts of this production of the Spelling Bee is the addition of the dancers in three main numbers of the show. They were top notch dancers with one young lady who really stood out in each of the numbers, especially as the ballerina of one of the characters alter egos. She truly enjoyed her dancing role and was just as enjoyable to watch her. AMAZINGLY WONDERFUL CMT!!! Collapse

This show is hilarious!!! No two are ever alike. They take four audience volunteers and they incorporate them into the show. The talent level borders professionalism, and all of the performers are teens. The choreography is incredible especially during the Middle East flashback song. Comedic timing is spot on and the improv is wonderful. A MUST SEE. Collapse

We were lucky enough to see the show twice on Saturday, March 6. I have seen literally hundreds of shows at CMT over the years, and this one exceeded my expectations. Not only is the show itself funny, engaging and entertaining, the characters portrayed by the young adults at CMT really came alive. The performers at CMT come from all kinds of backgrounds and levels of experience, but this was truly a team effort, with professionalism and care for the role each player had to execute. Comedy and character development is never easy, we were absolutely impressed and highly recommend everyone to see this show. If you need a pick-me-up from a tough week, SEE THIS SHOW. It will put a smile on your face, and you'll take pride in the fact that this company is still thriving and turning out great shows. Congratulations to CMT. Collapse

This script is predictablly cheesey but in a good way. Sweet and era appropriate, there's a solid band, supporting a beautifully constumed cast, who have some wonderful dance productions numbers and a smattering of standout songs. Greg Gobel elicits a sigh and a smile from his first note, the kind of voice that's so lovely, you wish he had more songs to sing. Timing was good for the most part with the comedy, but this is no deep theatre expereince. Go with an open mind, don't try to make sense of the keystone cop type plot, just enjoy the music and the sparkles and the slapstick and you'll leave happy. Collapse

For high school this is a higher plane than seen at any other teenage production. The talent at Los Gatos High School is unsurpassed. I marked 0.5 stars down for the occasional sound/microphone problems, otherwise it would be a definite 5.0 Stars! Collapse

This productions is packed with talent, from the actors, singers and dancers to the musicians, choreographer and designers. Tabard does an outstanding job bringing the show to life -- Unfortunately, the script should have been left peacefully in its grave. Still, despite the weak book scenes and the many ungainly songs that don't further the story, it's a musical worth seeing for the talent and energy of the performers, and the first-rate production values. Mary Kalita is a high-steppin' fireball as the ingenue lead, and every principal brings plenty to his or her role. Gary Stanford Jr. and Nes Fragoso are stand-outs in their comedic character parts, Keith Pennings is slick and convincing as a silver-tongued lawyer, and James Creer's warm baritone and winning smile make his solos a vocal highlight of the evening. Sets and costumes are sleek and elegant, evoking the excess of the Roaring 20s. Overall, worth seeing, but I wish this great team had picked a better show. Collapse

i was very impressed with this show! it far exceded my expectations(no pun intended) it was very impressive for a youth theatre production and i was blown away with many of the spot on english accents. the shows simple set and stunning blocking made the show move so smoothly. the theatre was darling and intimate, you can tell the actors and director take pride in the theatre and the shows they produce. the only reason i did not give this 5 stars was because there was a bit of backstage noise but again in such a small space that was to be expected. none the less it did not ruin the show for me in any way and i would absolutely recommend this show to my friends and anyone reading this. i was more then pleasantly surprised with the show and thought it was done incredibly well. GO SEE THIS SHOW YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT. tix where cheap and worth it. Collapse

I did not realize Wayne Thiebaud event was a paid one as I would have bought tickets very early. That's too bad. Leaves a bad taste for me with regards to the San Jose Museum.

The Woman in Black is a wonderful show. It's genuinely creepy and had me on a low-level adrenaline kick for a good half-hour after I left. There are moments of comedy, especially near the start, but they soon fade away into a constant gloom. The Northside Theater Company does as wonderful a job as ever, but I expect no less from this class act. Only two more nights left, but if you can, I recommend you go! Collapse

I adored this production. It has been a long time since I have seen such an excellently acted, superbly directed piece of art. This piece was suspenseful, beautiful and masterfully acted. The effects (sound, lighting, and 'special') were wonderful and had our entire audience jumping and cringing. Ross Harkness and James Lucas were superbly paired and should work together much more often. Ambera DeLash as the woman in black was terrifying (though far too beautiful)! Angie Harkness did an amazing job with the staging and casting of this show. Any actor should consider it an honour to work with her. I highly suggest this show for anyone who enjoys a good scare and excellent theatre. If everyone invited me to make a show suggestion, this one would be it. Collapse

Your expectations will be blown away as Troy (Jordan Pajarillo) pierces your heart with his voice, Chad (Charlie Reign) shows you that he can dance (really really well), or even the new character, Jack Scott (Michael Navarro), makes some really bad puns! When I heard that this was actually more than half the casts first musical EVER, I could only hope that it is the first of many! The first weekend had some minor que problems, but it'll only get better from there. I'll be sure to watch every weekend and bring my friends to see it! Collapse

This show is a lot of fun. I went with a friend and was whispering stuff like "Oh, that's a reprise from HSM!" to her throughout. Haha, I'm almost too old for that, but seriously, this cast provides a good time and the music itself is full of energy. Now, all the cast is great but people I really noticed were: Troy, who has an impressive voice and knows how to use it, and also has the moves; Gabriella, who has a voice that rivals Troy's. Chad was a favorite early on, and Sharpay's acting is so perfect for that character. The little girl assistant is a bright spot as well. Each cast member's character (Ryan, Kelsi, etc) comes out so well, and there are too many examples of that to mention here. With the singing polish and stage presence, many of these kids must be CMTSJ alum, and if not, take that as a compliment. I should admit that I have some great friends on the staff and crew, but this is the essence of what I told them, and now you have it too. Go see it! Collapse

I really didn't go into this show expecting much. I really came to support my friend, but oh boy was I surprised. It ended up being one of the better nights of this year. The cast was great and Jordan Pajarillo was top notch in dancing, singing, and acting. Overall he was a great performer. The rest of the cast reminded me of the TV High School Musical and each took on the personality of their bigger TV counterparts. When I was younger, I watched HSM 2 with my little sister and this play made it come alive. The talent gathered for this cast was astounding and the play ran smoothly. HMS2 is high energy show and lots of fun, particularly for teenagers and preteens familiar with the story line. Jordan Pajarillo and Sarah Shimazaki play the leads, Troy and Gabriella. Both have superb singing voices. I particularly liked "Bet on It" where Jordan sings and dances spectacularly. The entire cast brings a wild exuberance which flows to the audience. This Spelling Bee musical is an extremely enjoyable show. I wasn't sure what to expect, but what I got was about 2 hours of off the wall characters and musical numbers. The cast of characters is diverse and dynamic. Each character is enjoyable and has an interesting story to tell. It may be set in a spelling bee, but that doesn't limit the action. There is a lot going on in this show. It is hard not to get sucked into the reality of the spelling bee as the actors do a great job of portraying each unique participant in the spelling bee. From magical feet to a conversation with Jesus, it's definitely an interesting ride. I would recommend this show to anyone who wants to see something funny, creative, and well acted. The theatre is also very intimate and makes the experience all that much more enjoyable. Collapse

I have seen La Boheme many times and I feel that Mission City Opera did a great job. Everybody I saw in the lobby seemed to agree that the acting and singing were on a very high level all around. The chorus was a little weak, but one comes to hear the leads and they did not disappoint. The previous reviewers comments about the Mimi looking 30 years too old is ridiculous. All the leads looked and sounded terrific and I was very impressed with this local production. The orchestra was excellent and the super titles helped a lot. Very nice venue. I was sad that I wasn't able to see and review this earlier in the run. I had no idea what to expect and musicals not being my favorite wasn't sure I was going to be the target audience. 5 actors, 31 songs, and a beutiful set and fantastic live band. 3 out of the 5 singers were just FANTASTIC, really on key, beautiful harmony, able to move, and fun to watch. The other two although not always note perfect, made up for it somehow in energy, smiles, and heart. This was a short show, with some lovely Fats Waller tunes, and is easy to enjoy. There were at least 3 songs that were among the best I have seen and heard from any group in the area...committed performances by actors you could tell enjoyed the music and the stage. I love that SBMT has stepped up seemingly every aspect of their productions. Costumes were amazing, the simple but beautiful set fit perfectly and I really enjoyed myself. Collapse

This production each year is always a surprise. Some of the pieces are great, some of them not, sometimes the ensemble shines, sometimes not so much. I never know what to expect. This year I liked it quite a bit and though these pieces which are 8 short 10-15 minute plays seem to me to always go on JUST a bit to long, I was entertained by more pieces this year than I have been for several years now. Additionally, this year I saw new faces acting at the pear, and they were good fits to the intimate space, and to the variety of the pieces. If you have never been to Pear Slices before, this would be a good introduction to the local writing talent here and you might even see some actors you've never seen before! Collapse

Not many of us are lucky enough to travel and view Olympic Events up close and personal but you can get a taste of a truly professional gymnastic event here in San Jose. The Spirit of the Flame Gymnastic Meet is hosted by West Valley Gymnastics and is a remarkable three day event with over 800 gymnast competing from all over the United States. Last year was our first time attending this event and you can be sure we'll be there again this year. There is something for everyone, amazing athletes, serious judges, shopping, food, and even a kids zone to keep the little ones busy. Everyone dressed in red is there to ensure you have a positive experience, they all seemed well trained and happy to help! I would strongly encourage anyone with an interest in sports or gymnastics to attend this upcoming event. We need to support our local athletes, who knows maybe we will get a chance to see the Olympics in our own backyard....San Jose in 2020?? Collapse

I attended this last Sunday's performance with a group of friends and had a lovely time. The two main actors carried the story quite masterfully, while the Lady in Black sent numerous chills down the audience's spine, appearing in the wings at the perfect moment. The lighting and sound created utterly beautiful, tingly moments that had us all wriggling in our chairs. The story ended with a truly touching moment, brining a tear to the eyes of many in the audience. I would highly recommend the show to any connoisseur of the arts. Collapse

It's hard not to be impressed by the skilled acting and staging that has gone into this production. The story, while not a thriller, did keep me engrossed and guessing what would happen next. Two actors play multiple roles in the production and work with each other to relate the events of a "dark and stormy night" in Northern England. As is always the case, the stage at Northside was simple but effective, even extending at times into the audience. Collapse
