Djerassi Resident Artists Program
The Djerassi Resident Artists Program has evolved dramatically in its 25-year history. In 1979, Dr. Carl Djerassi founded the Program in order to honor the memory of his daughter Pamela, a painter and poet, who died the previous year. The Program was modeled on artist colonies on the East Coast, and its purpose was to support emerging and accomplished artists. The family foundation that Dr. Djerassi established initially offered residencies to sole female artists, but in the early 1980s the Program was expanded to include men and began providing residencies for groups of artists of all disciplines. With the renovation of structures on a nearby ranch into fully operational living quarters and studio spaces, the project was transformed into a comprehensive residency program.
Today the Djerassi Resident Artists Program operates as an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with a governing board of 23 trustees. It is the largest program of its kind in the West and ranks among the best in the country. Each year dozens of artists from across the United States, and many from around the world, travel to the open hillsides and deep redwood forests of SMIP Ranch to take inspiration from the beautiful surroundings and seek refuge from the distractions of the outside world. While in residence, the artists work in peaceful isolation within a supportive community of fellow artists and Program staff, and thrive on the intellectual stimulation and collegial interaction that comes from living in this close-knit community.
The Djerassi Resident Artists Program is one of the original eighteen American organizations of its sort selected to be a founding member of the Alliance of Artists' Communities, a natiowide consortium and professional organization for the field, formed in September 1992.
