Due to the cancellation of most events and lack of new postings during early months of the pandemic many of our Network Members had an opportunity evaluate the path forward for their websites. The results came in many forms, but one of the most noticeable was a steady flow of requests to migrate from our older, more narrow “Apollo” theme to our newer, full-screen “Octave” theme. Through this process we realized that many of you still using the Apollo theme are probably not aware that migrating to the new theme is an option and why this is such a great idea!
Did you know…
#1 Our Octave theme is more adaptive
Many of us only view our sites from a desktop computer during the day at work, but many of your users are viewing your site on mobile devices, and that is where adaptive layouts become important. Content is easier to view and interact with when it is adaptive, and at some point in 2022, Google is actually going to start factoring how adaptive your site is into its search engine rankings.
#2 Designs are more impactful when they display the full width of the screen
When the Artsopolis Network began, the narrow presentation of the Apollo theme was considered the standard for modern website design. But, just like everything that’s been around for 20+ years, what’s considered modern web design has evolved. Our Octave theme displays full width spotlight image and video sliders, and allows for lots of content to be displayed on a page without it feeling ‘too full’. Perhaps most importantly though, is that almost all plugins and design editors, like Elementor, now assume your are working on a full width template, and have designed the visual aspects of their tools accordingly. On the more narrow themes, this sometimes results in printing being too small or elements feeling squished. What can we say, bigger does seem to be better when it comes to themes.
#3 Octave is one of the most widely used themes in the world
Why is this a good thing? Well first, we should explain, a theme is similar to the frame of a house. So while your site might not look anything like another site built on the Octave theme, the bones of the house are similar. The popularity of this frame is a great thing for our Network because it means that if a tool is developed for WordPress, it most likely has been optimized for this theme. It’s one of the reasons we chose to use it for our platform. It offers us lots of opportunity to build our own custom code, as well as integrate existing plugins/tools, with the confidence that the theme will continue to be well maintained and stay compatible in the long term.
